St. Luke's United Methodist Church will host screenings of Bear Me Into Freedom: Frederick Douglass and the Struggle for America’s Promise from Wednesday, July 1, through Sunday, July 5, 2026.
The hour-long documentary explores the life and legacy of Frederick Douglass, tracing his journey from enslavement on Maryland’s Eastern Shore to becoming one of the nation’s most influential voices for abolition, equality, and justice. The film highlights Douglass’s formative years in St. Michaels and his lifelong fight to fulfill America’s promise of freedom.
The screenings hold special significance at St. Luke’s, located at 304 S. Talbot Street, as Douglass attended the church’s predecessor, Sardis Chapel, while enslaved in St. Michaels.
The week will conclude with a special sermon on July 5 by Rev. Elmer Neal Davis Jr., commemorating the nation’s semiquincentennial and reflecting on Douglass’s enduring impact on American history and civil rights.
