Join the Frederick Douglass Honor Society for its annual community reading of Frederick Douglass’s powerful 1852 speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” Delivered during a time of intense national debate over slavery, Douglass’s words remain a powerful reflection on freedom, justice, and the American promise.
Fifty-nine local residents will take turns reading portions of the speech, highlighting its enduring relevance more than 170 years later. This free public event honors Douglass’s legacy and invites thoughtful reflection on our shared history and continued pursuit of equality.
