Oxford Museum: The Rise and Fall of Colonial Oxford

About the Exhibit

Oxford was ‘Carried on the Tide’ of the Revolution. ‘The Rise and Fall of Colonial Oxford’ is the story that the Oxford Museum is preparing. This year, 2026, marks the 250th anniversary of the Revolution. Fortunes rose like the tides, and for some, like the tides, fortunes fell.

The Port of Oxford was thriving before the Revolution. Ships crowded the wharf carrying goods back and forth across the Atlantic. Prosperity bound Oxford to England, but unrest was brewing. When the colonies declared independence, Oxford found itself torn between loyalty to the Crown and the promise of freedom. The choices made here shaped the fortunes for centuries to come.
