Second Annual Constitution Bowl To Be Held at TCFL
The Mid-Shore Constitution Alliance will host the second annual Mid-Shore Constitution Bowl on Saturday, September 12, 9:00 AM-12:30 PM and Saturday, September 19, 9:00 AM-12:30 PM at the Talbot County Free Library. The event is a fast-paced, engaging academic competition designed to inspire a love for civics and history, modeled after the popular “It’s Academic” bowl format.
The competition is part of several events the Constitution Alliance will be hosting during Constitution Week, September 13-19. Constitution & Citizenship Day itself falls on September 17. The events are especially meaningful this year as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence throughout Maryland and the United States.
Cambridge-South Dorchester High School, Colonel Richardson High School, Easton High School, The Gunston School, North Caroline High School, North Dorchester High School, St. Michael's High School, and Saints Peter and Paul High School will each have teams of four students. Competing teams will earn community recognition, and each member of the winning team will receive a $1,000 Scholarship to be applied toward tuition at the higher education institution of their choice. The format helps students develop critical thinking skills, teamwork, a deeper appreciation for the U.S. Constitution, and the importance of civic engagement.
Not only will the event provide students with an engaging and spirited educational competition, it is a fun, meaningful way to fulfill the long-standing federal requirement that schools receiving federal funds must recognize Constitution Day during this timeframe.
In addition to its educational programming and community events, the Constitution Alliance Fund is honored to award annual $1,000 scholarships to deserving Mid-Shore students whose educational and career aspirations reflect a commitment to the principles of the United States Constitution – whether through professions that require an oath to uphold it or through fields in which constitutional knowledge and civic understanding are fundamental. The scholarships are awarded through the Mid-Shore Community Foundation; applications open October 1 and close February 1 at www.mscf.org. The Mid-Shore Constitution Alliance, in partnership with the Washington College Institute for Religion, Politics & Culture and Operation Frederick Douglass on the Hill, works to promote civic engagement through education and a commitment to uphold constitutional values and the founding principles of freedom.
